South Coast Maine at a Glance
South Coast Maine is home to spectacular scenery, miles of white sand beaches,
unique shops and a variety of recreational activities. The greater Portland
area offers a wealth of attractions that document the history and culture of the
people and the land. Sitting on the shores of Casco
Bay, Portland's every-busy waterfront is alive with fishing boats, pleasure
cruisers, ferries and windjammers. York's
sandy beaches and good surf attract many visitors in the summer, while inshore
fly fishing and offshore shark fishing are popular activities for the avid angler.
In Kittery, fresh
lobster from boats fishing just offshore is eaten fervently, and in Ogunquit,
one can experience the peninsula beach, where water surrounds the land on three
sides. Heading inland, the state capital, Augusta,
sits on the Kennebec
River, which is a perfect place to fish, kayak and whitewater raft. Surrounding
the city are quaint New England villages, acres of farmland and pasture.
