Fort Preble Fort Preble was built in 1808 as a military fortress to defend Portland Harbor. Within the confines of the fort's walls is the Portland Harbor Museum. This museum contains historic artifacts and information from the area. Fort Preble is located on the campus of Southern Maine Community College.

The Schoolhouse Operating from 1901 to 1953, the Schoolhouse in Wells represents the time of education in rural communities. Desks with inkwells, a wood heating stove, a two-holed toilet and many other artifacts remain in the building for people to see.
