Located on Portland Harbor, with views of Portland's skyline, South Portland is a suburban city with a multifarious economy. The city's strategic location along the harbor allows it to perform its duty as Maine's retail center. The state's first strip mall was built in South Portland, and now the city contains Maine's largest mall, Maine Mall.The city is commonly divided into two sections. The industrial and commercial aspects of the city can be seen in the west half, while the more scenic community and residential areas are in the east. There are numerous green spaces and parks located throughout the area. Mill Creek Park is a popular destination, and the 3 mi (4.8 km) Greenbelt Walkway is a favorite trail that offers exquisite views of Portland Harbor.
There are a handful of attractions in South Portland that may spark interest among amateur historians. Fort Preble was built in 1808 as a military fortress to defend Portland Harbor. Within the confines of the fort's walls is the Portland Harbor Museum. Continually used as an educational tool by local teachers, the museum allows visitors and students to explore the harbor's past.
